Quality and Sustainability hand in hand

At Pyk Copenhagen, we feel it is our finest task to design shoes of the highest quality with the least possible impact on the environment. We do this, among other things, by only producing the shoes that are ordered and by using our metal-free and biodegradable biocouro leather.

Biocouro actually means bio-leather in Portuguese - and yes, we can see that it is a bit insane in reality to call it bio-leather, but then again; how many of us actually speak Portuguese? 😉

We use biocouro, as it is vegetable tanned leather, which is also biodegradable. This means that if you throw the shoes in a compost pile when you no longer need them, it will take no more than 15 days for the leather to turn into compost. Pretty cool, right?

Totally lovely 😉 👆

We do not want metal in our shoes!

90% of all leather used in traditional shoe production is still tanned with chrome III. It is an inexpensive method used to change the protein structure of the leather to avoid the degradation that would otherwise naturally occur.

Leather tanned with chrome can contribute to chrome allergy - and it is also not degradable or recyclable for other purposes.

It may sound a bit technical, but this is what you need to know:

CHROME=BAD!
BIOCOURO = AWESOME!

Acacia and mimosa? - no, it's not a luxury brunch.

Maybe you associate Acacia and Mimosa with a brunch plate on a Sunday morning - of course accompanied by a bucketful of champagne 🤪

But actually it can be used in the shoe world too! Extracts from Acacia and Mimosa trees are used to treat biocouro. It's a more complex process than normal chrome tanning and requires special skills, but it gives an irresistibly lovely and natural look, which also changes as the leather is used.

Just like George Clooney, it just looks better with time...

Not only the look - also what's inside counts!

We are in favor of design, quality and comfort going hand in hand (or if nothing else, then elbow to elbow). In all Pyk shoes with lining and insoles of leather, we also use our biocouro leather.

The leather has a thickness of 0.8 cm, which gives a thick, glove-like feeling and lovely comfort. You will hardly find more comfortable shoes to send your kids out into the world with. Just saying'.

Like the rest of our leather, it is completely metal-free and biodegradable - just as it should be.
