How we reduce shoe waste
Every day, an abundance of shoes is produced. Many of them never get used. Instead, they accumulate in warehouses, in stores or in our closets until they are either sold at a discount or dumped at landfills.
This unnecessary overproduction and shoe waste burdens our planet.
Within the past 10 years, the worldwide shoe production has increased with 21%. This means that every year, 3.2 new pairs of shoes are produced for each of the world's approximately 7.5 billion inhabitants.
According to a study by the consulting firm Quantis, world shoe production accounts for about 1.4% of the worldwide carbon emissions or about 700,000,000,000 kg of CO2 annually.
It is too much, and it should be stopped.
Pyk helps to reduce shoe waste by only producing the shoes that have been ordered. This prevents us from overproducing different styles, colors and sizes that may never be bought or used.
Additionally, with our circle program you can send us your used shoes (regardless of brand and what condition they are in) and get 20€ for a new pair of shoes. This way, we can create a circular system where we recycle old shoes every time new ones are purchased.
With Pyk shoes, we can recycle the leather and soles, and if the shoes are from another brand we assess whether they can be recycled.
We think this is common sense and it is our contribution to a more sustainable production - which eventually will create a more sustainable planet.
